Natural Dye Projects

Natural Inks: Out & About – Summer 2022

In May I was awarded a Microgrant for my Natural Inks project proposal.  I will research, create and teach techniques and recipes for natural, locally sourced inks which will then be screen-printed on to hemp fabrics. The culmination of the project will be delivered at the Sustainability Weekend on the 3rd/4th September as part of the Out & About celebrations.

Out & About will bring together cultural, community and hospitality businesses in the area, alongside community groups, local artists and creatives to celebrate creativity and making in Sheffield. Each of the four special Out & About Weekenders will have a theme of its own and offer a programme of FREE, family-friendly activities including drop-in creative workshops, exhibitions, newly-commissioned artworks, performances and events.

Out & About is generously supported by Sheffield City Council Economic Recovery Fund, and is led by a partnership between The Site Gallery, The Workstation, Yorkshire Artspace and Bloc.

AA2A Project – Green to Gold

In 2016 I did an AA2A placement at Sheffield Hallam University. Working with MA lead Roger Bateman we visited a local manufacturers who were working on producing a biopolymer fabric that when heated and pressed, became solid. I worked on dyeing the fabric with natural dyes and also creating a new design and screen printing that on to the finished dyed fabric. It was then heated and used to create a solid structure.
